On Being the Free AlternativeI've been thankful for NetNewsWire in 2021. It's become my main interface with the world of written content. It is simple, clear, and highly functional. It syncs my RSS feeds via iCloud, which save the extra step of needing an external RSS service - which was THE feature that set it apart from other reader apps. Plus its reader view fetching works like a champion. Permalink ๐

โMoral AND ethicalโWhen you hear someone has both moral AND ethical reasons, some smoke is being blown your way. Why canโt the reasons just be moral? Or simply ethical? Putting the both together cancels out whatever reasons weโre there in the first place. Permalink ๐

Convincing college studentsAs a former campus minister, I am familiar with the sheer volume of STUFF and FREE items and things and offers that get thrown at college students. Things get lost in the shuffle. Permalink ๐

One Year OutIn mid April last year my dog (Sherman) was doing a few of his expressly forbidden sprints along our neighbor's fence - chasing and keeping pace with the dog there. I work hard - probably too hard - to keep him from doing this. Sherman had been tied up to our swingset so he was wearing his halter for leash attachment. I reached out with my left hand and my ring finger somehow slipped into a metal ring on the halter. With Sherman running full speed, my finger snapped backhardand one of my tendons popped clean off its preferred bone. Permalink ๐

Medina Spirit fails a drug testHow can I explain this to my daughter? That, on occasion, people drug horses so they can run faster. Not because the horse needs to or cares - simply for profit and glory. Permalink ๐

Gov Reynolds Is WeirdGov Reynolds up in ye olde Iowa recently rescinded her statewide mask mandate, which was already a very late and half-hearted attempt, but hey, her slowness did earn her a nice little speaking slot at the Republican convention last summer. Permalink ๐

The mystery of COVID-19 in IndiaWhenever you make a phone call in India โ on landlines and mobiles โ instead of a ring tone, you hear government-sponsored messages warning you to wash your hands and wear a mask. One message was recorded by Bollywood legend Amitabh Bachchan, 78, who battled and recovered from COVID-19 last summer. Permalink ๐

Catch the WaterYou want to save the water that comes from yr tap. You also want to run the dishwasher every couple days. You've a big family. The dishwasher manual says to have the tap water run hot before you start the cycle; it'll be better that way. You run the water up to hot - but before it reaches that max temp, you catch all the coolerness and fill your 72 oz water bottle and also the coffee pot for tomorrow morning. Permalink ๐

Criminal podcast on Sister HelenI have loved theCriminal podcastfrom its outset. I appreciate the way host Phoebe Judge allows the voices of her topics to shine. Although a wave of "true crime" podcasts has come to dominate the landscape, Criminal has always stood out because it's scope is so much more broad than any isolated incident. The stories it presents also allow us to get a birds eye view of our criminal justice systems. Permalink ๐
