ONCE in Royal (fast and slightly noisy version)I've been working on some Christmas arrangements. Please enjoy this one. I try to show my love for the carols of yore through reinterpretation. Even though my vocals didn't come out well in this version (I'll revisit those at some point) it was still fun to put this together. Permalink π

Ghibli movies finally available digitallyThese have been available from libraries for years, but this is a welcome leap into modernity for Ghibli. They're also all coming to HBO Max this spring. My entire family loooooves the films. Permalink π

Mapping US Food InfrastructureDes Moines, IA plays a large roll in this map, as does all of the Midwest (Pennsylvania isn't in the Midwest, by the way). Flyover, USA turns out to be pretty important after all. Permalink π

Nova +4: Music for prefab homeI find it enchanting that a Japanese maker of prefabricated homes commissioned an accompanying soundtrack for said homes. Features a blend of natural and synthesized sounds to make one feel right at home in front of the hearth. Permalink π

NYT Popcasts on Hootie & the BlowfishI can vividly remember the absolute radio dominance of Hootie during my high school years. The time has now come for us to admit that they were, and are, a great band. Songs so catchy, but also secretly profound. Permalink π

BOTW infinite jump glitchI finally found a link that my son will enjoy if he ever finds my website (which won't happen, because people don't go to websites anymore). But that notion aside, I have mixed feelings about the phenomenon of speedrunning and glitch finding. It feels a bit seedy - but still, there's also something pure about it - discovering bits of the truest close to the metal essence of the code of a game. Permalink π

Youth suicides rose in 2017Itβs probably impossible to prove a direct causal effect between watching a TV show and completing suicide β all I know is that my wife watched the first season of "13 Reasons Why," and I couldn't stand it β it was simultaneously riveting and too painful to watch and made my stomach church scene to scene as I caught glimpses walking by. Einstein and black holesAmong all the black hole news last week, one of the things I find most fascinating is that the very existence of black holes was merely a surprising side effect of a particular solution to Einstein's General Relativity equations. It inspires me to consider that an idea from over a century ago is just now beginning to fully blossom (as also seen in the 2016 LIGO gravitational wave detection). Permalink π

When Little Boys Wore DressesAs the father of a little boy who wears a lot of his big sister's hand me downs, and frequently gets mistaken for a girl, I think the world would be better if we could, at the very least, delay gendered clothing differences until late childhood. Permalink π
